Good Luck

I just wanted to take a moment to wish you all GOOD LUCK as you prepare for the last test of the semester.

It has been a pleasure helping you study for this class. For those of you who have attended my SI sessions in person, thanks for putting up with all of my crazy stories. It's been fun hanging out with you. As I said in SI today, come find me on Facebook if you want to stay connected!

And for those of you who were unable to come to the sessions, I hope the word lists helped you even just a little bit.

I hope everyone gets into the programs to which they've applied. Please keep in touch and let me know when you get your acceptance letter. You can email me any time at wrightidea@msn.com.

Take care,
Maria

Last SI Session

Tomorrow, Thursday, April 28th will be the last SI session of the semester at the regular time.

There is NO SI next week during finals week.

You may email me this weekend/next week, but please give me a couple of days to get back to you as I will be studying hard for my own finals & working too.

Reminder of Schedule

We will have SI as usual this week & next week.

There will be NO SI at all during finals week.

Open lab sessions close a week from today at noon on 4/25.

YouTube Videos to Help with Lab Material

Hey, everyone! One of your fellow classmates found some videos on YouTube that have helped her study some lab material. Here's what she told me...

"I found a much better video on Youtube for the blood vessels, in case anyone wants to see it. Its called 'Human Blood Vessels Anatomy' by mommyime. Dr. Fabian has great videos for the Kidneys and male and femal repoductive systems."

Hope this helps!

Completed Blank Word List for Test 4

Here is the complete word list for test 4. For those who already printed part 1 that I previously posted, pages 6-10 on this file are new. For those who didn't print anything yet, you can just print all ten pages.

This word list does not include everything you need to know for the test, so make sure you study everything in your lecture notebook.

A Few Lab Resources

I made these when I took this class & thought some of you might find them helpful. I believe there's some extra stuff on each of them, so be sure to compare them to what you need to know in your lab notebook.

Test 4 Word List Part 1

Hi, everyone! The countdown is on to the end of the semester. Yea! There is only one more lecture test left, and I encourage you to stay on top of the material by coming to SI and/or filling in the word list.

I have part of the test 4 word list done at this point. The attached five pages will take us through page 95 in our lecture notebook. I hope to complete the second part of the word list before next Tuesday's SI session. Check back here because I'll post it when it's done. Please keep in mind that I made this list from my notes that I took a year ago, so the wording may be slightly different.

Don't forget -- my word list does NOT include everything you need to know for the test. You are responsible for all material in the lecture notebook.

See you in SI! For those of you who cannot attend the SI sessions, please email me at wrightidea@msn.com if you need help filling out the word list.

Troubles opening the word list?

Well that's weird! I posted the word list like I usually do, but it's not wanting to open like it usually does. Try this.....

Click on the link as usual. Even if it opens & looks blank, go ahead & download it (save it) onto your computer like you usually do. If you're prompted to pick a program to open the file, choose excel. Then it should open fine.

If you still have problems, you can pick up a hard copy from me in the 1:30 lecture or in SI. Or email me at wrightidea@msn.com & I'll email you the file.

(The file below is the same that I posted earlier this week. I'm just trying to post it again in case people have better luck opening this one.)

A bit of a change in plans.....

I hope you all had a nice, relaxing spring break! I had some fun changes happen in my life. The first is that I have a new job with CASA in addition to this SI. I will be helping pre-nursing students and current nursing students with math for a couple of hours a week until the end of the semester. If you are applying for the nursing program this spring & want help preparing for the math portion of the TEAS test, let me know & I'll tell you the details. I also got ANOTHER job offer. When it's official, I'll tell you what it is.

Needless to say, life for me for the next eight weeks is going to be crazy busy. In an attempt to work ahead, I already did the whole word list for the third test. I worked off my notes from when I took this class, and I am hoping everything will match up perfectly. If not, we will figure it out together. So there are 12 pages of blank word list below. Thanks in advance for your patience with me. See you in SI on Tuesday!!

Reminder

I just wanted to remind you that there is no SI tomorrow (Thurs.3/3) or next week. SI will resume Tuesday 3/15.

Good luck on the test!!

Last Update of the Word List for Test 2

Can you even believe I got this done already?!

Here is the final copy of the blank word list for the second test. I just added one page (page 12), and we will go over this in S.I. on Tuesday. This will be the last S.I. session before the test. There will also be time for me to clarify anything, so bring your questions with you. If no one has any questions, we will spend the remaining time quizzing each other.

As usual, I would like to include the disclaimer that this word list is NOT all inclusive. You will be held responsible for everything in the notes as well as everything that Professor Shannon discussed in lecture. I hope you have found my word list to be a good study tool though. You should be able to find all of the answers in your notes, but if you get stuck please email me at wrightidea@msn.com or come see me in S.I.

Enjoy the rest of your weekend & happy studying!

A Couple of Hints for the Upcoming Lab Practical

Get your hands on your sheep heart as much as possible. As you're studying it, follow along in your lab notebook & be sure to find all of the parts that are in bold text.

For the lung capacities, draw yourself a copy of the graph/picture that is in the practice practical. Be able to find all of the definitions on there as it may look a bit different than the figure in the book.

Hope this helps!

Updated Word List for SI on 2/17

We will go over pages 6 & 7 tomorrow in SI. Keep in mind, this word list is not all inclusive.

Monday, February 14, 2011

Updated Word List for SI on Feb.15th

Here you go! We will go over pages 4 & 5 tomorrow in S.I. This list does NOT include everything you need to know for the test. Please be sure to study from your notes too.

Word List for SI on Thursday 2/10

Page 3 is the most recently added info, but we'll go over pages 1-3 in SI tomorrow since I was out Tuesday.

Just a reminder...I don't include EVERYTHING on these word lists, so be sure to study your notes too.

If you have problems opening the file, try my handy hints in one of the previous posts.

ALERT: No S.I. Session Today 2/8

I got hit hard with the flu all of a sudden yesterday. I will NOT be holding my Tuesday SI session today at noon; however, I did post the word list yesterday. You may assume that the Thursday session will happen as planned, but check back here just in case I'm still sick.

Open Lab in the Coming Weeks

I just found out there will no open lab times from Monday 2/21 at noon through Friday 2/25, as well as from noon on Monday 2/28 through Friday 3/4.

For those of you who are new to SI & my blog....
I will keep adding to this list & will repost once it's updated. I will also indicate which pages are new in case you've already printed some.

No S.I. This Afternoon

I hope everyone enjoyed the snow day yesterday! I know I did even though I spent a fair amount of the day catching up on homework. It was just nice not having to leave the house. If only we could have gotten one more day...

I just wanted to remind you that there is no S.I. session this afternoon.

Also, don't forget to email me your test grade at wrightidea@msn.com.

See you guys in lecture this afternoon or in S.I. next Tuesday!

Good Luck on the First Test!

I want to wish everyone good luck on the first lecture test! Here are a few words of advice for you.....

Don't wait until Monday to start studying ;)

Be sure to get a good night of sleep the night before the test.

Eat something before you take the test! Remember how your brain needs that glucose to fuction well.

Take your time when taking the test. It's not a race. I advise going through the test & marking your answers before you bubble in the scan-tron sheet.

I would LOVE to know how you do on the test so that I know that my materials are actually doing some good. When you find out your score, would you please send me a quick email at wrightidea@msn.com? You can just put "test 1 score" in the subject line & your score in the email. You don't even have to sign your name to it, but you can include feedback if you want. I promise to keep your information anonymous.

S.I. Sessions This Week

Just a reminder.....

There will be S.I. on Tuesday 2/1 at the regular time & place. I will not have any new handouts for this session since it is right before the test. I will reserve this time to answer any questions that you may have. If nobody has any questions, I can use the time to quiz you from the word list.

There will NOT be S.I. on Thursday 2/3 because there will not be any new lecture material to cover. I realize that there may be some students in the Friday night class who have not taken the test yet, but I will still not hold S.I. on Thursday. This is at the request of Professor Shannon.

How to Open the Word List File

1. Click on the link to the file
2. Click on the download button on the bottom right (it looks like a down arrow)
3. Save the file in a folder of your choice on your computer
4. Open that folder on your computer
5. Open the file (it should be saved as an excel document)

IF the file saves to your computer as a generic file type or a .txt file, try these steps....

1. Double-click on the file
2. It will ask, "Do you want to open this file?" Click on the "open" button.
3. It will ask, "Choose the program you want to use to open this file." Choose "Microsoft Office Excel" (you may have to "browse" to find the program) & click on the "Ok" button.
4. It will ask again, "Do you want to open this file?" Click on the "open" button again.
5. You may get a message that says, "The file you are trying to open is a different format....(blah, blah, blah)....Do you want to open the file now?" Click the "yes" button.
6. It should then open in excel.

If you have tried both of these & are still having problems opening it, email me at wrightidea@msn.com so that I can email the file to you.

Another Resource for Test 1

I developed the attached spreadsheet when I was studying for this class. It helped me keep the digestive system secretions straight. I did not double check to make sure all of the information matches this year's lecture, so you might want to do that if you decide to use it. You may also want to revise it to include more (or less?) information.

P.S. I color coded the ones that were found in multiple places.

Something to Keep In Mind

I've said this in SI many times, but I thought I'd say it once more for all of you who can't attend the SI sessions on campus.

My word lists contain a lot, but this is NOT all that you have to know for the test. Just because I don't include it doesn't mean you don't have to know it. You are responsible for everything in the lecture notes.

Last Blank Word List for Test 1

Here is the final word list for the first test. I was going to wait until after tomorrow's lecture to complete it, but I decided to look at my notes from last year to finish it up. So this is it. I will not be adding anything else to this word list.

We will go over pages 9-11 in SI tomorrow (Thursday). We will also go over page 23 in the notes in more detail. If there is time, I can also cover anything from the practice test.

A Note About Printing the Word List

In order to print the word list in the same format I provide in S.I., you'll want to download the file & save it. Then you can open the file & print it or type in your answers.

If you try printing it without saving the file first, it will look funky.

Hope this helps!

Updated Word List as of Jan. 24th

Here is the updated word list with last Thursday's lecture information. We will go over pages 6-8 in S.I. on Tuesday, January 25th.

I hope to see you there!

Wednesday, January 19, 2011

Updated Word List as of 01/19/11

Here is the most recent word list updated with Tuesday's lecture material. You should be able to download & save this as an excel file. The most recent pages are 4 & 5. We will go over these two pages in S.I. tomorrow at 3:00. Hope to see you there!

Hip Hip Hooray!

Thanks to those who helped me test the previously posted links. From what I've heard, the links are now downloadable & printable. I will plan to post the updated word lists on this blog instead of emailing them.

The Start of a New Semester

Happy start-of-a-new-semester, everybody!

Today is the day before the spring 2011 semester starts at IPFW.  I am excited to be a supplemental instruction leader again this semester.  As many of you know, last semester I picked up the BIOL-203 S.I. in the middle of the semester.  It took a little while for me to get in the swing of things, but I think we eventually got into a pretty good groove.  This semester I will be leading the BIOL-204 supplemental instruction that goes along with Professor Shannon's class.  I will be doing things in much the same way, but I am going to try utilizing this blog instead of emailing everybody.  I believe it will be a more efficient way for me to communicate with you, with a few added bonuses.

I am exploring all the possibilities on doing things this way, so bear with me.  My first test is to make sure I can add a link to the documents I want to have available for you.  So let's give this a shot.  Can you guys open these files.....
BIOL-203 Word List for Test 3
BIOL-203 Word List for Test 4

If that works ok (which I hope it will!) then I think this will be a great way for me to get the information for my supplemental instruction sessions to you, and you will be able to check here for the latest information.  Please let me know of any thoughts or suggestions that you may have regarding this.

I hope that everyone had a nice break and is rested and ready to go for this new semester.  I have to admit that my break was relatively peaceful and lazy.  I am taking 13 credit hours this semester as well as attending Professor Shannon's BIOL-204 class (the 1:30-2:45 p.m. Tues./Thurs. lecture) and leading the supplemental instruction sessions that go along with it.  I am still awaiting my finalized days and times for S.I.  As soon as I get those, I will post them here, and I will also have Professor Shannon post them on her website.  From what I understand, they will begin the week of January 17th.  I am looking forward to helping you all do the best that you can in this class, and I hope to see many of you attending the S.I. sessions!
